Through the provision of charitable resources, 1STEP mobilizes winter sports communities worldwide in addressing climate change and energy issues, with the aim of promoting environmental health and social wellbeing. 1STEP focuses on 3 strategic areas (ABC):

Awareness Raising and education around the issues of climate change and environmental degradation in the context of winter recreation.

Building and supporting sustainable models and products to be
adopted by ski resorts and individuals.

Carbon reducing, offsetting and sequestering.

We believe that actions speak louder than words and actions taken collectively are the best way of effecting change. That’s why we have partnered with organizations in both public and private spheres to work together on sustainability initiatives and combating climate change. During the Telus Ski & Snowboard festival here in Whistler (April, 24, 2009), 1STEP hosted a live and silent auction to raise funds for Whistler’s 2020 Sustainabiltiy Initiatives.  Funds went to protect Natural Areas in the Sea to Sky Corridor and to the implementation of waste collection systems that support residents without vehicles. 1STEP will be collaborating with the Play It Cool Program to support athletes in lowering their carbon emissions. Check out:  www.davidsuzuki.org.

1STEP will be supporting the dissemination of research findings by UBC Master’s glaciologist student Nicolas Teichrob at the upcoming International Snow Science Workshop in Davos, Switzerland.
