1Step Now

philosophy

There is mounting evidence that the world is facing climate change of immense proportions.  The predicted global temperature rise of 2-5 degrees Celsius will result in extreme weather events such as heat waves, melting ice caps, coastal flooding, droughts and fires to name a few. These events threaten not just our winters, but life on this planet.
Something must be done.  It starts with 1 person taking 1STEP towards sustainability.

On Sustainability…

The term ‘Sustainability’ is getting a lot of play these days and because it is used so variably, there are lots of people that think it has lost its meaning and substance.  So let’s be clear, when we at 1STEP talk about sustainability we are really talking about being resilient and ‘ensuring that future generations will be able to meet their needs’ (Bruntland Commission, 1987). This means that economic growth cannot be the sole measurement of progress or the only ingredient in the recipe for success. Instead it must be in tune with environmental and social wellbeing.  As folks that love to play outdoors, we are striving to find a balance between our right to connect with nature and the responsibilities that go along with playing our sports. We take our lessons from nature and believe that by mimicking natural systems and endeavoring to keep in step with them, 1STEP will move towards a sustainable future.

On Climate Change…

Many scientists consider climate change to be one of the greatest threats facing the world today. That’s because the effects of climate change- an increase in the intensity and frequency of storms, droughts & fires, raising the levels of the oceans and melting glaciers- spell catastrophe for many of the world’s inhabitants. Some will debate the role humans have played in the heating of the Earth’s surface, but the research we support suggests that almost 100% of the observed temperature increase over the last 50 years has been human induced. It’s the result of an increase in the atmosphere of heat trapping greenhouse gases, notably carbon dioxide (CO2), with the burning of fossil fuels being the largest contributing source.
It is up to us, to use whatever tools are available to reduce dangerous emissions of greenhouse gases and find ways of pursuing the sports we love in the most sustainable ways possible. Check out climate change resources for more information.
